White Oak (Grevillea baileyana) 5 seeds
The White Oak (Grevillea baileyana), also known as Brown Silky Oak, is a handsome native tree celebrated for its striking foliage and fragrant, creamy-white flowers. Its large, glossy green leaves have a distinctive rusty-bronze underside, particularly on new growth, adding a unique texture and colour to the landscape. This fast-growing species can develop into a medium to large tree, providing excellent shade and attracting a variety of birds and insects, making it a fantastic choice for a feature tree or in a larger garden setting.
To prepare White Oak (Grevillea baileyana) seeds for planting, scarification is highly beneficial due to their hard seed coat, which helps to improve germination rates and reduce the germination period. A common method is to gently nick the seed coat with a sharp blade or file, taking care not to damage the inner embryo. Alternatively, you can pour hot (but not boiling) water over the seeds and allow them to soak for 24-48 hours as the water cools, changing the water after 12 hours. Seeds that swell indicate successful scarification and are ready for planting.
Sow the pre-treated seeds in a well-draining native seed-raising mix in a warm, sunny position. Lightly cover the seeds to a depth of about 1-2 times their thickness. Maintain consistent moisture in the seed-raising mix, but avoid overwatering, as Grevilleas are sensitive to excess moisture and phosphorus. Germination can be erratic, ranging from a few weeks to several months, so patience is key. Once seedlings are robust enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots, using a potting mix suitable for phosphorus-sensitive plants. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before planting them in their final position, ensuring they have good drainage and plenty of sunlight.
