Violet Kunzea (Kunzea parvifolia) 200 Fresh Seeds
The Violet Kunzea (Kunzea parvifolia) is a stunning and resilient native shrub, cherished for its profusion of vibrant, deep violet-pink to purple bottlebrush-like flowers. These beautiful blooms emerge primarily from late spring through summer, creating a spectacular display that is highly attractive to a wide array of native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Its fine, aromatic foliage and compact to spreading growth habit make it an excellent choice for rockeries, informal hedges, or as a feature plant in a native garden, bringing both colour and life to the landscape.
To prepare Violet Kunzea seeds for planting, no specific pre-treatment like scarification or cold stratification is typically required, as fresh seeds usually germinate readily. However, ensuring the seeds are clean and free of any chaff can help prevent fungal issues. For some Kunzea species, a very light smoke treatment (using commercial smoke water products) can sometimes improve germination, mimicking natural bushfire conditions, but it's often not essential for K. parvifolia.
Sow the very small seeds on the surface of a well-draining, fine-textured native seed-raising mix. Do not cover the seeds with soil, or cover with only the barest dusting of fine sand, as light can aid in their germination. Gently press them onto the surface to ensure good contact with the mix. Keep the soil consistently moist by misting, but avoid overwatering, which can lead to damping off. Place the tray in a warm location with bright, indirect light. Germination can be variable and may take several weeks. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots and continue to provide warmth and consistent moisture until they are ready to be planted out. Ensure good drainage in their final planting site.
