Germination Instructions
 
While they can be into the garden, raising in punnets or seed trays is often recommended in Australia to protect young seedlings from slugs, snails, and heavy downpours.
Fill seed trays or small pots with a light, free-draining seed-raising mix. Moisten the mix lightly before planting.
Scabiosa seeds need light to germinate.  Press seeds gently onto the surface of the soil and cover them very lightly (about 3 to 4 mm deep) with fine seed-raising mix or vermiculite.  Do not bury them deeply.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
Optimal germination temperatures are between 18°C and 21°C.  In cooler regions, keeping trays indoors on a bright windowsill or in a greenhouse helps maintain steady warmth.
 
Seeds typically sprout in 10 to 20 days.
 
Transplanting and Early Care
Light: Once sprouted, move the seedlings immediately to a bright, sunny spot so they don't become leggy.
Hardening Off: When seedlings are roughly 6 weeks old and have developed a couple of sets of true leaves, harden them off by gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions over a week.
Position & Soil: Plant them out in a full sun position with well-draining soil (they dislike sitting in soggy, heavy clay during wet weather).  Space plants about 30 cm apart.
