Sturt's Desert Pea Seeds
HOW TO GROW STURT’S DESERT PEA:
Step 1
Place the seeds into a container and pour freshly boiled water over the top, allow to soak for 10 seconds and then add some cool water to bring the water back to luke-warm and leave to soak for 12-24 hours.
Step 2
Sow each seed about 2-3mm deep into small pots of a well-draining pre-moistened mix of half garden soil and half propagating sand. Place into a warm, shaded or semi shaded position and check regularly to avoid drying out. Ideal temperature for germination is 18-24°C. Seeds should germinate after 3-4 weeks.
Step 3
Transplant seedlings once necessary, not before they have at least 2 true adult leaves.
Step 4
Transplant to final position after last frost. Don’t over water during establishment as the Sturt’s Desert Pea can be susceptible to rot. Additional water advised when flowering. Sturt’s Desert Pea is grown as an annual as is both drought and frost tolerant once established. If the flower is picked as they first open, they will last around 30 days in water.
Height: up to 2 metres
Width: up to 30 centimetres
Sturt’s Desert Pea is native to all mainland states in Australia except Victoria.
It is the floral emblem of the state of South Australia.
The common name honours Charles Sturt, who saw large quantities of the flowers while exploring central Australia in 1844.
