Growing Stevia in Australia
Stevia, a natural sweetener 250-300 times sweeter than sugar, is native to the tropical regions of Paraguay and related to sunflowers and chrysanthemums. It has a long history of use by the Guaraní people for over 1500 years as both a medicine and a sweetener.
Here's how to grow your own Stevia:
Step 1: Sowing Your Seeds Sow 3-4 stevia seeds about 3mm deep into individual small pots filled with a mix of moist soil and sand. Place your pots in a bright, sunny spot. In Australia, it's best to sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost in your region.
Step 2: Germination & Care Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Stevia seeds need warmth to germinate, so maintain temperatures above 10°C. If your indoor temperatures are consistently below this, consider using a heat mat. You should see seedlings emerge within 2-4 weeks.
Step 3: Transplanting Seedlings Once your seedlings have sprouted, either thin them out by removing the weaker ones or carefully transplant each seedling into its own pot. Wait until your seedlings are 7-8 weeks old and all risk of frost has passed before transplanting them outdoors. Stevia can be grown directly in the ground or in pots. If you live in a colder Australian region, growing in pots allows you to easily move your plants indoors to protect them from frost during winter.
Step 4: Harvesting Your Stevia In warm, sunny Australian conditions, your stevia plants can be ready for harvest within 5-6 months. In cooler climates, it may take a little longer.
