Scarlet Banksia (Banksia coccinea) 5 seeds

This truly spectacular Banksia is prized for its vivid, fiery red flower heads, which stand out dramatically against its dark green, serrated leaves. The cylindrical flower spikes emerge prominently from late autumn through spring, acting as beacons for a variety of nectar-feeding birds, bringing a dynamic element to your garden. Its striking appearance makes it an excellent feature plant, capable of adding a bold statement to any landscape. It typically grows as an upright shrub or small tree, reaching a moderate height, making it suitable for various garden sizes. The distinctive foliage is stiff and deeply toothed, providing year-round interest.

For successful germination of these seeds, a smoke treatment can significantly improve results, mimicking natural bushfire conditions that stimulate germination in many species. After treatment, sow the seeds in a well-draining seed-raising mix, ensuring good aeration. Cover them lightly with the mix, roughly to a depth of 1.5 times the seed's width.

Keep the planting medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. A warm and sunny location is ideal for germination, but protect young seedlings from scorching sun. Germination can be slow and unpredictable, so patience is crucial.

Once seedlings are robust enough to handle and have developed a few sets of true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual pots or their final garden position. This Banksia thrives in full sun and requires exceptionally well-drained, sandy soils. It is intolerant of heavy, clayey soils and prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH. While established plants are drought-tolerant, consistent watering during dry periods is beneficial, especially for young plants. Critically, avoid phosphorus-rich fertilizers, as Banksias are highly sensitive to phosphorus. Use only very low-phosphorus formulations designed for native plants, or simply refrain from fertilizing once established in suitable soil.
