Royal Poinciana Tree Seeds
The Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) is truly a show-stopper, famed for its breathtaking display of vibrant, fiery red-orange flowers that blanket the tree during warmer months. This fast-growing, deciduous tree develops a wide, umbrella-shaped canopy, providing excellent shade and a spectacular visual presence. It's an iconic choice for tropical and subtropical landscapes, making a bold statement wherever it grows.
To prepare Royal Poinciana seeds for planting, scarification is highly recommended to break their dormancy and improve germination rates. This can be achieved by gently rubbing the seeds with fine sandpaper or carefully nicking the hard seed coat with a small file or nail clippers, taking care not to damage the inner embryo. After scarification, soak the seeds in warm water for 24-48 hours, changing the water after the first 12 hours. The seeds should swell during this process; if they don't, repeat the scarification and soaking.
Plant the treated seeds in a well-draining seed-raising mix in a warm, sunny location. Sow them about 1-2 cm deep and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 1-3 weeks, but can be irregular. Once seedlings emerge and are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots. Provide plenty of sunlight and protect young plants from frost or cold temperatures. Gradually introduce them to outdoor conditions before planting them in their permanent position, ensuring they have ample space to accommodate their mature size and spread.
