Oats are sown in the spring or early summer in colder areas or as soon as the soil can be loosened.
Oats are high in fibre, protein and a range of vitamins and minerals.
Oats are best grown in temperate regions with the world’s biggest producers being Russia, Canada and Australia.
Soil Preparation
Oats aren't overly fussy, but they hate "wet feet" (waterlogged soil).
Sun: Full sun is non-negotiable.
Soil: Well-drained soil with a pH between 4.5 and 8.5.
Fertiliser: If soil is poor, a light application of a nitrogen-rich fertiliser or aged compost before planting will help.
Sowing the Seeds
Broadcast (scatter) them by hand or plant in rows, 2–5cm deep.
If you are planting in a dry spell, plant slightly deeper (around 5cm) to reach the sub-soil moisture. If the soil is damp, 2cm is perfect.
Germination Care
Watering: Water immediately after sowing to settle the soil. Keep the soil moist but not soaking wet until you see green shoots (usually 7 to 10 days).
