Growing Kiwi Fruit from Seed: A Patient's Guide
Growing kiwi fruit from seed is a long-term project, as it can take 3 to 5 years before your vine produces fruit. The first step is to extract the tiny black seeds from a ripe kiwi. You can do this by blending the fruit with water for a few seconds to separate the pulp from the seeds, then rinsing them in a colander.
To prepare the seeds for planting, they require **cold stratification**, which simulates the winter conditions needed to break their dormancy. Place the clean seeds on a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag and refrigerate for 2-3 months.
After stratification, sow the seeds about 1/8 inch deep in a seed-starting mix. Keep the soil moist and maintain a warm temperature at around 20-30°C to encourage germination. Be aware that not all seeds will sprout, and of the ones that do, you'll need both male and female plants to produce fruit. Once the seedlings are strong enough, transplant them into larger pots and eventually to a sturdy trellis or support system in a sunny, sheltered location.
