Organic Green Cardamom Seeds .

HOW TO GROW CARDAMOM :

Step 1
Note: Cardamom prefers humid, hot climates but can be raised in greenhouses or indoors in colder climates whilst young. Put the seeds in a plastic container and pour hot water over them. Leave to soak for 48 hours.

Step 2
Prepare small pots with a 50/50 mix of seed raising soil and propagation sand. Moisten (do not over-wet as seeds may drown or rot). Place seeds on top of this mixture and cover with approximately 1/2 cm of damp propagation sand.  If you do not have a mini greenhouse you can cover the pots with plastic wrap to maintain moisture and humidity. Keep moist and leave in a warm, partially sunny position (preferably filtered / indirect sun). Cardamom can be sown directly into the ground but is only recommended for tropical climates. Keep warm or indoors for entire germination process. Ideal temperatures for germination are 20-27°C/70-85°F Average germination will begin around 4 weeks but may take anywhere from 2-12 weeks.

Step 3
Once sprouted, continue to keep moist but do not over water! If you are using plastic wrap you can start to slowly remove this over a week or so. Can be transplanted if necessary once at least two true leaves are present. Keep in pot until after first winter has well passed. Will require tropical conditions and regular watering to produce optimum results. Cardamom takes 18-24 months to mature.

NOTE: Cardamom seeds are often difficult to germinate as it can be hard to break down their natural dormancy / hard seed coat.  Instead of soaking for 48 hours, you can soak for 15 minutes in a 50% solution of nitric acid, this can yeild higher germination rates, but not something we do ourselves.

Height: up to 4 metres (13 feet)

Width: up to 2 metres (6 feet)

Cardamom is one of the worlds most expensive spices along with Saffron and Vanilla.

It is an ingredient in many Indian curries and is a primary contributor to the flavour of masala chai. In Iran, cardamom is used to flavour coffee and tea.

True Cardamom is native to Southern India but has also been naturalised in Costa Rica and in Reunion.
