Hymenosporum flavum
Native Frangipani
The exceptional perfume that comes from the Native Frangipani’s striking yellow spring flowers is reason enough to plant this fast-growing rainforest tree. The highly fragrant frangipani-like flowers in clusters, starting out cream and turning to yellow, are a magnet for birds and native bees. Shiny dark-green pittosporum-like foliage allows light to pass through while bringing a tropical feel to the garden. A regular prune will restrain its height and provide a more compact form. Fast growth rate.
How to grow
Sow seeds 2mm into sandy soil mix at 25 degrees C in a greenhouse or a warm humid environment. Keep moist. Germination takes about 2 months.
Plant in full sun or part shade, prefers fertile soil, though tolerates a range of soil types. A regular prune will provide a more compact form. Drought tolerant once established.
