A Guide to Growing "Climbing" Strawberries from Seed
Growing strawberries from seed is a rewarding project, especially when cultivating the so-called "climbing" varieties. It's important to know that these plants don't actually climb on their own; they are regular strawberry plants that produce long runners that can be trained up a trellis or other support structure. This method is a great way to grow more berries in less space, keeping them off the ground and away from pests.
To start, fill a seed-starting tray with a light, well-draining mix. Strawberry seeds are very small, so sow them on the surface of the soil. They need light to germinate, so don't bury them deep. You can lightly cover them with a thin layer of vermiculite, which helps hold moisture while still letting light through.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy, and maintain a warm temperature between 18-21°C (65-70°F). Germination can be a slow process, often taking two to four weeks. Once the seedlings have a few true leaves, you can carefully transplant them into their own pots. When they're established, move them to a larger pot or garden bed with a trellis, gently guiding the runners to grow upwards as they develop.
