London Plane Tree Seeds (Platanus x acerifolia)
The London Plane Tree (Platanus x acerifolia) is a majestic and enduring deciduous tree, widely recognized for its distinctive exfoliating bark, which peels away in patches to reveal a mosaic of creamy, olive, and brown colours. It boasts large, maple-like leaves that provide dense shade through the warmer months and turn a lovely golden-brown in autumn. Highly tolerant of urban conditions, this robust tree is an iconic choice for avenues, parks, and large gardens, offering both impressive scale and year-round visual interest.
To prepare London Plane Tree seeds for planting, cold stratification is highly beneficial, though not always strictly essential, to improve germination rates. Mix the seeds with an equal volume of moist sand or peat moss, then place this mixture in a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate for 60 to 90 days at a temperature between 1°C and 5°C. It is important to keep the medium consistently damp but not waterlogged throughout this period.
Once stratified, sow the seeds thinly on the surface of a well-draining seed-raising mix or directly into prepared garden soil in a sunny to partially shaded location. Lightly cover the seeds with a very thin layer of fine soil or sand, as they can benefit from some light for germination. Maintain consistent moisture, ensuring the soil remains damp but not saturated. Germination can be variable and may take several weeks to a few months. Protect young seedlings from strong winds and intense sun until they are well-established.
