Cultivating a Bonsai from Seed: A Guide for the Patient Gardener
 
Growing a bonsai from seed is a fulfilling, long-term project that requires a great deal of patience, as it can take many years to achieve a mature, miniature tree. It's important to understand that "bonsai seeds" are not from a special species of tree; they are simply seeds from ordinary trees that can be trained and shaped over time.
For many temperate tree species, the most important step is cold stratification. This process mimics the natural cold and moist conditions of winter, which is essential to break the seeds' dormancy. To do this, you'll place the seeds in a moist medium, such as a damp paper towel or sand, and refrigerate them for a few months.
 
Once stratified, plant the seeds in a well-draining soil mix, keeping them consistently moist and providing ample sunlight. Be aware that not all seeds will sprout, so it's a good idea to plant several. When the seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves, you can carefully transplant them. The real art of bonsai begins here, as you'll spend the next several years carefully pruning and shaping the plant to create its unique form. This journey is not about speed, but about the mindful process of nurturing a tiny seedling into a living work of art.
