Grevillea Holly Leaf (Grevillea wickhamii) 10 Seeds
The Grevillea Holly Leaf (Grevillea wickhamii) is a striking native shrub or small tree, renowned for its tough, holly-like foliage and spectacular, showy flower spikes. These vibrant, often orange to red, brush-like flowers appear predominantly during the warmer months, creating a stunning visual display and providing a rich source of nectar for honey-eating birds. It's an excellent choice for adding a bold architectural statement and attracting local wildlife to a dry garden or feature planting.
To prepare Grevillea Holly Leaf seeds for planting, scarification is highly recommended due to their hard seed coat, which significantly improves germination rates. This can be achieved by carefully nicking the seed coat with a sharp knife or file, taking care not to damage the inner embryo. Alternatively, pour hot (but not boiling) water over the seeds and allow them to soak for 24-48 hours as the water cools, changing the water after 12 hours. Seeds that swell are ready for sowing.
Sow the pre-treated seeds in a well-draining native seed-raising mix in a warm, sunny position. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil or sand, no more than 1-2 times their thickness. Maintain consistent moisture in the seed-raising mix, but be cautious not to overwater, as Grevilleas are sensitive to excess moisture and phosphorus. Germination can be erratic, often taking several weeks to a few months, so patience is key. Once seedlings are strong enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots, using a potting mix formulated for phosphorus-sensitive plants. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before planting them in their final position, ensuring they have excellent drainage and ample sunlight.
