The fruit is orange-red, about 2.5cm long. The flowers are about 1cm wide and light purple in colour. Goji grows readily from seed, but the seedlings are sensitive to changes in temperature. Home gardeners typically grow goji seedlings in a greenhouse for the first year.
How to Germinate Goji Berry seeds
PLEASE NOTE GERMINATING SEEDS IS AN INTRICATE PROCESS & DOES REQUIRE EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE OF CLIMATE & YOUR LOCALE.
1. Fill a planting tray with garden soil in the early spring. Sow the goji seeds on the soil in the tray, then cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Move the planting tray to the greenhouse. Keep the soil moist.
2. Remove the goji seedlings from the planting tray when they are large enough to transplant, usually within six months. Plant the seedlings in individual planting pots keeping them in the greenhouse. Water the seedlings to keep the soil moist.
3. Select a planting site for the goji plants. Goji plants should be in full sun.
4. Prepare the soil for the goji plants. Goji can tolerate a range of soil types, so long as the soil has good drainage. Goji plants thrive in acid and alkaline soils and have a high tolerance for salt.
5. Plant the goji plants in the outside site in late spring to early summer. Water the plants as needed to provide at least 2.5cm of water per week during the growing season.
6. Pinch the tips of growing goji stems to make the plant bushier. Prune the stems to a height of 60cm in late winter with pruning shears. Goji can seed itself in the spring if it survives the winter.
