From the north of Italy, we bring you the artichoke of aristocrats, Violetto. This violet-bracted 'choke has small, oval, slightly elongated flower heads that measure 8cms wide by 13cms long. A bit later maturing than Green Globe, Violetto will produce abundant crops of mouthwatering artichokes for at least 4 years. Divine when served with melted butter or plain yogurt blended with a touch of mustard.
Germination Instructions
Artichoke seeds are relatively large and easy to handle, but they can be stubborn if the soil is too cold.
Pre-soak (Optional): Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before planting to soften the tough outer shell and speed up the process.
Depth: Sow seeds 10mm deep.
Method: Use individual deep punnets or "root trainer" pots. Artichokes have a sensitive taproot; the less you disturb it during transplanting, the better.
Temperature: They need a soil temperature of 21°C – 26°C to germinate. If you’re starting in late winter in a cool climate, a heat mat is highly recommended.
Timeframe: Expect sprouts in 10–21 days.
10 seeds in each pack.
