Grow Your Own Dragon Blood Tree: A Faster Start
While Dragon Blood tree seeds can be slow to sprout, often taking up to two warm seasons if simply planted, we've refined a method to significantly shorten the germination period. Our approach aims for sprouts in 6 to 12 weeks, much faster than the typical 8-12 weeks.
Step 1: Prepare Your Seeds for Sprouting
First, boil water and then let it sit for 10 minutes. While the water cools, gently scuff the surface of each seed with sandpaper or by rubbing it on concrete. This helps the seed absorb water.
After the water has cooled for 10 minutes, pour it over your scuffed seeds in a bowl. Let them soak for 48 hours, changing the water after the first 24 hours. For an extra boost, you can repeat the boiled water process, but this time, let the water cool for 30 minutes before pouring it over the seeds for another soak. After 48 hours, drain the water.
Step 2: Plant for Success
Prepare small pots (at least 10 cm or 4 inches wide) with a soil mix that's half sand. The sand helps further wear down the seed's outer layer.
If your daytime temperatures are below 15∘C (59∘F), use a heat mat or find a consistently warm spot, like the top of a fridge. Sow each seed about 20 mm deep into the pre-moistened soil. To create a humid environment, cover the pots with clear plastic wrap, like Glad Wrap.
Step 3: Nurture Your Young Sprouts
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by checking it every few days and misting as needed. Remember to carefully replace the plastic cover each time. If you have a soil thermometer, aim for a consistent temperature of around 20∘C, as this significantly improves germination rates and speed.
Seeds can sprout in as little as 6 weeks, but some may take up to 12. Once you see seedlings emerge, remove the plastic cover. Move them to a location where they'll receive about 2 hours of morning sun daily. Be sure to bring them inside if temperatures (day or night) drop below 10∘C.
Step 4: Gradual Sun Exposure & Ongoing Care
Gradually increase the amount of sunlight your seedlings receive each week, starting with morning sun. Keep your Dragon Blood trees in pots, upsizing as their roots begin to show through the bottom. In colder climates, it's best to keep them in pots until after their third winter, especially if frost is a concern.
Step 5: Transplanting and Long-Term Growth
Transplant your trees in spring, well after the last frost. Choose a spot where they'll get maximum sunlight. Mulching around the base can help keep roots warm in winter and prevent drying out in summer. Only water when the soil has dried out completely.
