HOW TO GROW HEARTSEASE :

Step 1
Viola seeds can be sown straight into the ground or in pots. Fill pots to approximately 1/2 inch from the top and sow seeds 1-2 inches apart on top of the soil. Completely cover seeds with 2-3 mm of soil as Voila's need darkness to germinate. Water thoroughly and place in a warm, shaded location. Ideal temperature for germination is 18-22°/65-70°F In ideal conditions seeds should germinate around 10-14 days.
Step 2
Keep moist and once seeds are starting to sprout they can be moved into a brighter location. Seedlings are ready to plant out once they have at least 2 true leaves and as long as winter is not on the way. If the seedlings have been indoors, before planting out harden them off by introducing them to outdoors a few hours a day, increasing the time and the level of sunshine by 1-2 hours per day. Remember to keep the soil moist!
Step 3
Space the seedlings roughly 6-8 inches apart. Don’t over water during transplanting. Final position acn be in full sun. Heartsease takes roughly 50-60 days to flower. Straight into the garden Loosen the soil in the planting area. Sprinkle seeds and cover with approximately 2-3 mm of further soil. Water thoroughly and keep moist during entire germination process (not wet). Depending on the time of year, germination may take a little longer.Thin or pinch off seedlings to 6-8 inches apart once true leaves are present.

Viola tricolour has many common names such as Johnny Jump Up, Heartsease, Hearts Delight, Tickle-My Fancy, Wild Pansy and Three Faces in a Hood to name only a few.
Viola has been used in traditional medicine for many ailments including respiratory conditions, skin problems rheumatism and stimulating metabolism.
Like many other pansies, the Viola tricolor is used in dyes to colour fabrics.
The Viola genus is a popular flower in mythical tales and was named for a lover of the god Zeus. Viola tricolor was used as a symbol of Athens.
