Golden Wattle Seeds
HOW TO GROW GOLDEN WATTLE :
Step 1
Place seeds in a container of near boiling water and leave to soak overnight. Seed that swell are ready to be sown; any others may need re-soaking.
Step 2
Prepare a seed tray or pots with a well-draining seed raising soil with approximately 25% propagating sand mixed in. Place seeds on surface spaced 5mm apart and cover about the width of the seed with more soil. Moisten soil and keep moist (not wet) for the entire germination process. Place in a spot that warm, sunny spot with afternoon shade. Ideal temperature for germination is 25°C - in these optimal conditions, seeds will germinate within 1-4 weeks.
Step 3
Seedlings are ready to be transplanted gently once they have at least 2 'true' leaves or around 2-3cm tall. Once established enough to be planted out pick a well-draining spot that has full sun to part shade, wait to do this until after the lasts frosts of winter have passed. Golden wattle can tolerate some frost and can be reasonably drought tolerant. If mulching the area avoid the base of the tree to prevent stem rot. Prune each year after flowering to maintain a thick healthy bush.
Height: up to 3-8 metres
The Golden Wattle was adopted as the floral emblem of Australia in 1988.
Acacia pycnantha exudes gum when stressed. Eaten by indigenous Australians, the gum has been investigated as a possible alternative to gum arabic, commonly used in the food industry.
Both yellow and green dyes can be made from the Golden Wattle. It is grown around the world for the tannin in its bark.
