Feijoa sellowiana (Pineapple Guava) is an evergreen fruit shrub that is native to temperate regions of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.  Pineapple Guava shrubs not only produce popular egg-sized fruits but is widely grown as an ornamental flowering hedge.  The fruits taste like a combination of pineapple and guava with hint of spearmint but spoils quickly which is why they aren't often seen in supermarkets.

How to Germinate from seed:
 
Things You Will Need
Heatproof watertight pot
4-inch planting pot
Soilless seed-starting mix
 
1.  Place guava seeds in a pot of boiling water, and boil for five minutes to break seed dormancy and speed germination.
2.  Fill a 4-inch nursery pot with soilless seed-starting mix.
3.  Press one guava seed into the centre of the pot.  Use your thumb to gently press the seed under the soilless mix, then cover it with 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the mixture.
4.  Soak the pot with water using a gentle misting spray or the soak setting on the hose to avoid disrupting the seed.
5.  Place the pot in a warm place with a temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit or above. Guava seeds germinate in two to eight weeks.
6.  Keep the soilless mix moist by watering when the top of the soil starts to feel dry under your finger.
 
Tips
An alternative to boiling the seeds is to soak the guava seeds in water for two weeks prior to planting.  Seed treatments, called stratification, allow the seed coat to soften and germinate.  Different seeds require different pre-planting treatment.
In cool climates, placing the pot on a heating pad designed for seed starting helps maintain a consistent temperature of 18 C.
