From Seed to Vine: A Guide to Growing Climbing Roses
Growing climbing roses from seed is a fulfilling project for the patient gardener, offering a unique opportunity to cultivate a new plant from scratch. Unlike buying a cutting, the rose you grow from seed may be a unique hybrid, surprising you with its own distinct color and form. Be prepared, however, as it can take a few years for your plant to mature and produce its first bloom.
The secret to success lies in a process called stratification, which simulates the cold, wet conditions of winter that rose seeds need to germinate. To do this, you'll need to plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a container of moist seed-starting mix. Then, seal the container in a plastic bag and place it in the refrigerator for 10-12 weeks.
Once this chilling period is complete, move the container to a warm spot with a soil temperature between 16-21°C (60-70°F). Don't lose hope if germination is slow or inconsistent; sprouting can take time. When the seedlings are strong enough to handle—usually after they've developed their first "true leaves"—you can transplant them into individual pots. Provide them with plenty of sunlight, and with a little patience, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent climbing rose.

A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae, or the flower it bears. There are over three hundred species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses.
