Carnations are beloved for their vibrant, frilly, and often fragrant double blooms, bringing a touch of classic elegance to any garden or floral arrangement. This "Choice Double Mixed" assortment offers a delightful array of colours, from soft pastels to bold reds and pinks, ensuring a captivating display. Whether you're creating a colourful border, filling containers, or cutting flowers for indoor enjoyment, these carnations are a rewarding addition, blooming profusely over an extended period.
To prepare Carnation seeds for planting, no specific pre-treatment like scarification or cold stratification is typically required. Fresh seeds generally germinate readily without these steps. However, ensuring the seeds are clean and free of any chaff can help prevent fungal issues during germination.
Sow the seeds lightly on the surface of a well-draining seed-raising mix. Do not cover the seeds too deeply, as they can benefit from some light for germination; a very fine dusting of vermiculite or sand is sufficient. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering. Maintain a warm environment for germination, ideally between 18-21°C. In areas with cooler climates, it's best to start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Germination usually occurs within 7-14 days. Once seedlings are strong enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots, and gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before planting them in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Regular deadheading will encourage more blooms.
