Stunning Blue Mallee Gum (Eucalyptus socialis) - 100 Fresh Seeds
The Blue Mallee Gum (Eucalyptus socialis) is a captivating and adaptable mallee species, known for its attractive blue-grey foliage that shimmers in the sunlight. This multi-stemmed eucalypt typically grows as a large shrub or small tree, making it a wonderful feature for gardens of various sizes. It produces clusters of creamy white to pale yellow flowers, which are a valuable nectar source for local wildlife, adding both beauty and ecological benefit to your landscape.
To prepare Blue Mallee Gum seeds for planting, no specific pre-treatment like cold stratification is generally required. Eucalyptus seeds, including Eucalyptus socialis, typically germinate well without it. However, ensuring the seeds are fresh and have good viability is key. A simple test is to float them in water; viable seeds will usually sink.
Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of a well-draining seed-raising mix in a sunny position. Lightly cover the seeds with a very thin layer of fine sand or soil – no more than 1-2mm deep – as some light can assist in their germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to prevent damping off. Germination usually occurs within 2-4 weeks, but can be variable. Once seedlings are sturdy enough to handle, carefully prick them out and transplant them into individual pots. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before planting them in their permanent position, ensuring they have plenty of sun and good drainage.
