A Guide to Cultivating Hibiscus from Seed
Cultivating hibiscus from seed is a rewarding way to grow these stunning tropical flowers. To maximize your chances of success, you should begin with a preparatory step called scarification. This means gently nicking the hard outer shell of each seed with a knife or rubbing it with sandpaper. This crucial step helps the seed absorb water more easily.
After scarification, soak the seeds in lukewarm water overnight. Once prepared, plant the seeds about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in a sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix. Hibiscus seeds need warmth to germinate, so aim for a soil temperature of 21-24°C. A heat mat can be very helpful for maintaining this temperature.
Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, which can cause the seeds to rot. Germination is a patient process, and it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. When the seedlings have developed their first set of true leaves, they are ready to be moved to larger pots. Provide them with ample sunlight and understand that while they will grow into beautiful plants, it may take a few years before they produce their first spectacular blooms.
