Growing Hibiscus from Seed: A Quick Guide
Growing hibiscus from seed is a straightforward process, but a little preparation can significantly improve your success rate. The seeds have a tough outer coat, so to help water penetrate, it's best to scarify them. This involves gently nicking the seed with a knife or rubbing it with sandpaper. After scarification, soak the seeds in lukewarm water overnight.
Next, plant the seeds about 6 to 12 mm deep in a sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix. Hibiscus seeds require warmth to germinate, so maintain a soil temperature of around 21-24°C. You can use a heat mat to achieve this if needed. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to prevent rot.
Germination typically takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Once the seedlings have their first few sets of true leaves, they can be transplanted into larger pots. Ensure they receive plenty of sunlight, and be patient, as it may take a few years for your hibiscus to mature and produce its magnificent blooms.
