Blackboy (Xanthorrhoea Preissi) 30 Seeds

A curious plant from Western Australia with a stocky trunk to 7 metres tall, that holds a bristly crown of long, hard, narrow, needle-like leaves that remind of a large tuft of grass.  It is common in areas with frequent brush fires that leave the trunk blackened, hence the common name.  Growth is slow, about 1 metre in 30 years, but plants are robust and very drought tolerant and can take some frost with ease.  It does best in warm temperate climates and prefers a place in sun on well drained ground.

HOW TO GROW BLACK BOY / GRASS TREES:

Step 1 Sow in warmer climates anytime, for colder climates wait until the last frost is gone.  Start in 10cm pots.  Use a well-draining sandy soil mix preferably.  Plant 2-3 seeds flat on the soil of each pot and cover lightly (about the width of the seed) with more soil.

Step 2 Water gently, then cover each pot with some plastic wrap (glad wrap) to keep the moisture and humidity inside the pot.

Step 3 Place pots in a warm location to germinate and be sure to keep the soil moist - NOT wet.  Germination should occur if ideal conditions are provided between 4-8 weeks.   Once sprouts begin the plastic wrap can be removed. 

Step 4 When fertilising us a native wildflower fertiliser.  Seedlings can be planted out once they are well established around 1+ years old.
