Aquarium Seeds: What You Need to Know
While "aquarium seeds" promise an easy way to create a lush, green carpet in your fish tank, it's wise to proceed with caution. Many of these seeds are not from true aquatic plants. They are often fast-growing terrestrial plants that will sprout and look great for a while, but they are not meant to live submerged. Eventually, these plants will die, decompose, and can cause significant problems with your water quality, leading to algae blooms and an unhealthy environment for your fish.
For those who still want to try, the dry start method is the most common approach. Start with a clean, empty tank and a layer of nutrient-rich substrate. Evenly sprinkle the seeds on the surface, making sure not to bury them. Keep the seeds and soil moist by lightly misting daily, and maintain a warm temperature of around 25°C (77°F) with plenty of light.
Once the seeds have sprouted and formed a dense carpet (which can take a few weeks), you can slowly add water to the tank. This method gives the plants a chance to establish a stronger root system, increasing their odds of survival. However, for a more reliable and long-lasting aquascape, it's generally best to use genuine aquatic plants from a reputable supplier. This will ensure the long-term health and stability of your aquarium.
