What to Know Before Planting "Aquarium Seeds"
The allure of "aquarium seeds" is strong—a promise of an instant, lush underwater carpet for your fish tank. However, it's crucial to understand what you're actually planting. Many of these seeds are not from true aquatic plants at all. They're often terrestrial or semi-aquatic varieties that will grow quickly but are not meant to live fully submerged long-term. When they inevitably die off, they can wreak havoc on your water quality, leading to frustrating algae blooms and a toxic environment for your fish.
For those who want to take the risk, the "dry start" method is your best bet for a chance at success. Start with a clean, empty tank with a layer of nutrient-rich substrate. Evenly sprinkle the seeds on top, then mist the substrate to keep it moist—not wet. Cover the tank to maintain high humidity and keep the temperature around 25°C (77°F). Provide plenty of light.
After several weeks, when a dense carpet has formed, slowly begin to fill the tank with water. This process gives the plants a chance to establish a strong root system, increasing their odds of survival. But for a stable, thriving aquarium, it's always safer and more reliable to use genuine aquatic plants or bulbs from a reputable source.
