The aloe is a succulent plant, with leaves that can hold water for long periods at a time. Too much water can rot the plant, and it would take the most severe drought to dry it out. The plant's only other enemy is cold. It will do quite well next to a window with even minimal light, but it prefers bright, indirect lighting. An aloe plant is a welcome friend in the kitchen.
Seed Germination
Aloe seeds generally sprout quite easily. Correct medium and situation is needed for higher success rate. A half and half mixture of peat and horticultural sand makes an excellent, well-draining medium. A combination of the sand, sterile compost and perlite can be used. The idea when growing aloe from seed is to provide loose material that will not get soggy and is not prone to pathogens or weeds.
Any container will do, but flats use less soil and create a controlled environment for seedlings. Lightly dampen the medium and spread the seed about an inch apart. Cover them with a light dusting of the sand.
In warm climates, grow the seeds outdoors. Otherwise, start them indoors with the addition of bottom heat of some kind. Keep the medium moderately moist either way in bright light and where temperatures are ideally 23 C.
Care During Aloe Seed Propagation
Many growers put a plastic lid on flats or containers in plastic bags to keep humidity high for germination. If using a non-sterile organic medium, this can lead to fungal issues that may kill the plants.
Mist the surface of the soil to keep it moist until you see sprouts. This may take 2 to 4 weeks depending upon species. Young seedlings should stay on a heat source for two weeks as they develop roots.
INTERESTING HISTORY OF ALOE VERA: The name was derived from Arabic meaning "bitter" because of the bitter liquid found in the leaves. In 1500 B.C. Egyptians recorded use of the herbal plant in treating burns, infections and parasites. Egyptian Queens Cleopatra and Nefertiti both gave tribute to aloe vera as one of their most important beauty secrets. Alexander the Great carried the aloe vera plant into battle to treat wounded soldiers. The plant dates back 6,000 years, and has been in use for all that time.
